The Planning Studio worked with WATG in master planning much of the residential development within King Abdullah Economic City near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. KAEC is a 168 square kilometer (64.9 sq. mi.) new city off of the Red Sea, approximately 100 kilometers north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is being developed by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority. It has six main precincts, a seaport, an industrial valley, an educational zone, a central business district, resorts and extensive residential areas. Overall, it is projected that the city will house a eventual population of over 2 million people.. Residential development is anticipated to to include 260,000 apartments and 56,000 villas. The Planning Studio’s work also included the design of a cruise ship terminal and precinct to deal with and house thousands of pilgrims arriving in Saudi Arabia for participation in the religious Haj.
